Retainers are hire-able NPCs whose services can be requested for a small fee. They can be found in Taverns around the main world. Hiring retainers is a great way to delegate menial tasks such as woodcutting or fishing.

Requirements

  • Have a rank of atleast Yeoman. (See Ranks for more information on retainer limits)
  • Have sufficient gulden in your inventory. The cost of hiring each retainer varies depending on their stats
  • Have atleast one dwelling that can house a bed. (See Rentable Properties for a guide to purchasing one)

Benefits

  • Send retainers to work on menial tasks, such as mining, woodcutting and fishing
  • Have retainers run orders, such as processing material and crafting artisan products
  • Assign retainers as shopkeepers who will purchase or sell goods on your behalf (even when you're offline)
  • Hire retainers as bodyguards who will fight alongside with you

Hiring Retainers

Retainers can be hired from taverns all around the main world. One such example is the tavern in Innsbruck, which can be found at coordinates X:668 Y:67 Z:767. To look at the stats and the option to hire retainers, right click on them while having your bare hands out. After a retainer is a hired, another retainer will be randomly generated to replace his/her place.

Retainer Stats

Each retainer has a randomized stats in the following areas:

  • Appetite - Determines the speed of retainers growing hungry while working on an assigned task
  • Intellect - Determines how fast the retainer will level his/her skills
  • Personality - Provides a bonus when assigning retainers in a relevant task
  • Gender - Cosmetic purposes (Females are more expensive to hire)
  • Name - RP purposes, can be one of the names in a random pool of 400
  • Age - RP purposes, can range from 13 to 42

The "quality" of the retainer are embedded in the stats of Appetite, Intellect and Personality. Retainers with more favorable descriptions in these stats are more capable. However, the more favorable stats a retainer has, the more expensive it is to hire him/her.

For each of the core stats (Appetite, Intellect and Personality), there will be a textual description displayed to represent how high the stat is.

Appetite

Appetite determines how fast the the retainer will grow hungry while performing a task. Lower tiered description indicate that the retainer requires more sustenance as they will eat more frequently. Retainers in idle mode do not need to eat.

2 Gourmand Hunger grows very quickly
3 Gourmet Hunger grows extremely quickly and demands a full course in his/her meals

Intellect

Intellect determines how quickly and how much the retainer learns. Each retainer will have skill levels in certain tasks, such as Woodcutting, Fishing and Mining. Retainers with higher levels of intellect will be able to grow these skill levels at a faster rate and are also capable of reaching higher skill levels in selected skill categories. Skill levels will determine the level of reward obtained when sending retainers out for a task.

However, the smarter a retainer is, the higher his/her demands are. Retainers with higher tier in intellect will require a more luxurious bed to accommodate them. Retainer with no bed will be in idle mode and cannot be sent for task or assigned as shopkeeper/bodyguard. Smarter retainers will also demand a wider selection of quality food for their meals. More luxurious food will required a higher level in Cooking A meal can consist of a main, an alcohol, a dessert.

Personality

Personality provides an external bonus to the retainer's ability in a relevant task. Retainers with more desirable personalities such as Mercantile and Martial will be more expensive to hire.

Managing Retainers
